Considered a suburb of Tampa, and yet a city within itself, Brandon was founded by John Brandon when he purchased 40 acres of land in1858. He arrived with his wife Martha and six sons. Soon after arriving, Martha passed. John remarried and settled in a home on what would become Victoria Street, named after his second wife. The road still bears her name today.
In 1876, John's son, James Brandon, built a two-story home that would eventually become a city landmark that's still standing. The Stowers Funeral Home on Brandon Blvd has been in business since 1960, but the building has been there for over 135 years.
Around 1890, the Florida Central and Peninsula Railroad came through the area. This encouraged the early residents of Brandon to build a depot on Moon Avenue, also where the very first general store opened in 1905. A second school on Parsons Avenue opened around the same time and before long Brandon was growing into a city. Today, Brandon has over 100,000 residents and more than 2,500 businesses.
Why live in Brandon?
